Mythologica et Erotica (Mythology and Eroticism)

MythologyeroticaAt the Palazzo Pitti: Mythologica et Erotica (website in Italian only) (Mythology and Eroticism) at the Museo degli Argenti (Silver Museum) until May 15, 2006. The show features 213 works from Italian and foreign museums. The range of works on display is remarkably wide with paintings, murals, sculptures, ceramics, prints, jewellery, coins and various other precious items - all depicting erotic stories from ancient mythology. We saw this show last week almost by accident - a ticket to the Boboli Gardens includes entrance to the exhibit. While it is a little uneven, and some of the presentation borders on kitsch, the work speaks for itself. The roman and greek sculptures were the stand out pieces for me, along with the actual rooms used for the exhibit which are covered in some of the most vivid frescoes you will see anywhere. Overall, a show filled with treasures though, as if there wasn't enough to see in Florence already. If you are here anytime from now until May 15, 2006, I highly recommend this exhibit.
