Fuori Porta
Fuori Porta has been a San Niccolò institution since 1987, born out of Andrea Conti's frustration with the state of wine drinking in Florence at the time. In the late '80s, finding a decent glass of wine by the bicchiere was nearly impossible - what passed for house wine in most places was barely drinkable. So Conti did something about it.
The original space was tiny - little more than a counter and a few stools, with no real kitchen to speak of. That limitation turned out to be a blessing: unable to cook proper dishes, they started making crostoni - thick grilled bread loaded with toppings - and the city fell in love with them. They remain the signature dish to this day, and honestly, they're reason enough to make the trip down to the Porta San Miniato.
The menu has evolved considerably since then, with Tuscan classics alongside some Sardinian influences and a few unexpected touches from further afield. But the wine list (it is a little dated) is still the heart of the place, and that hasn't changed since day one.
