Ponte al Pino Bridge Works: Current Street Closures Near Campo di Marte (Through 14 August)

If you're arriving in Florence by train this summer, you may run into some disruption around Ponte al Pino, the rail overpass connecting Campo di Marte and Santa Maria Novella. Here's what's actually happening right now, and what to expect if your trip overlaps with the ongoing works.

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is replacing the bridge's aging steel deck — a structure dating to the late 19th century — with a new steel-concrete span. The project runs from 25 May to 14 September 2026, and it comes in phases, each with its own set of closures. Understanding which phase you're walking into makes a real difference to how much it affects your visit.

Where things stand as of today

The most disruptive phase — a full rail interruption between Campo di Marte and Santa Maria Novella, with High Speed (Alta Velocità) passengers shuttled by bus between the two stations — ran from the evening of Sunday 26 July through 11:00 on Thursday 30 July. That interruption is over: train service between the two stations has resumed as of yesterday morning.

What's still in effect is a separate, narrower closure tied to dismantling the construction crane. From 28 July through 14 August, via degli Artisti (between piazza Vasari and via Masaccio) and via Luca Giordano (between via Fra' Buonvicini and via degli Artisti) are closed to vehicle traffic. This is a street-level closure, not a rail one — it won't affect train travel, but it will affect anyone driving, cycling, or getting a taxi through that stretch of the Campo di Marte / via Masaccio neighborhood. Emergency vehicles and residents with private garage access in the area are exempted.

If you're using Campo di Marte or Santa Maria Novella stations

For the moment, this is a non-issue: trains are running normally between the two stations. That said, this is one of several planned interruptions over the course of the project (an earlier one ran 5–10 July), so it's worth checking RFI's own service updates before you travel if your dates fall later in August or into early September, since another rail-side closure isn't out of the question as the project moves toward completion.

The pedestrian footbridge that lets people cross where the vehicle bridge is out of service has also been intermittently closed during the more intensive phases of the work. If you're planning to walk between the Campo di Marte and via Masaccio sides of the neighborhood, don't assume the footbridge is open — it comes down whenever crane or deck work requires it.

If you're driving or on a scooter in the area

Through 14 August, avoid routing yourself along via degli Artisti or via Luca Giordano near piazza Vasari. Via Fra' Buonvicini has a temporary one-way change (toward via Luca Giordano) to help redirect the traffic that would normally use those closed stretches. If you're using a GPS app, it's worth double-checking your route manually here rather than trusting real-time rerouting, since roadworks of this scale don't always update quickly in mapping services.

What's next

Once the crane is fully dismantled after 14 August, the project moves into its final stretch: finishing work on the new deck through the rest of the summer, with the bridge reopening to vehicle traffic in mid-September 2026. Pedestrian access via the temporary footbridge continues in the meantime, subject to the same intermittent closures during active construction phases.

None of this affects the historic center or the main sightseeing areas — Ponte al Pino is well outside the tourist core, on the eastern side of the city near Campo di Marte. If your itinerary doesn't involve that stadium/station neighborhood specifically, you're unlikely to notice any of this.
