Tramvia Line 3: Libertà to Bagno a Ripoli - October 2026 Update
Florence's next tram line, the 7.2-kilometer Line 3.2.1 from Piazza della Libertà to Bagno a Ripoli, is in its heaviest construction phase. The city still officially targets completion, including pre-service testing, by the end of 2026. Here is what the line is, where it runs, and what it means if you are driving or taking the bus in the eastern half of the city this fall.
The project in numbers
The line costs €448 million, partly funded by Italy's PNRR recovery plan. It will have 17 stops and is projected to carry more than 11 million passengers a year, taking about 9,000 car trips off the roads each day and cutting CO2 emissions by an estimated 4.4 million kilograms. The project also includes more than 800 new trees and roughly 1,500 new parking spaces along the route.
The route
The line connects to the existing tram network at Piazza della Libertà, with its terminus on a short spur along Viale Don Minzoni. From there it follows the ring avenues - Viale Matteotti, Piazzale Donatello, Viale Gramsci, Piazza Beccaria and Viale Giovine Italia - then runs along the Arno on Lungarno Pecori Giraldi, Lungarno del Tempio and Lungarno Colombo. After the Ponte da Verrazzano it continues on Via Poggio Bracciolini, Viale Giannotti, Viale Europa and Via Pian di Ripoli before turning onto Via Granacci for the Bagno a Ripoli terminus, where the depot will also be built. A new road bridge with bike lanes and sidewalks is planned just upstream of the Ponte da Verrazzano.
Some stretches will look very different when finished. At Piazzale Donatello the tracks split on a grassed bed around the English Cemetery, with an expanded green buffer around the monument. On Viale Giovine Italia the stop sits just past the State Archives, with grass track running near the Torre della Zecca Vecchia.
A new Piazza Beccaria
The biggest urban makeover is Piazza Beccaria, which the city wants to turn from a traffic roundabout back into a true piazza, with the old Porta alla Croce as its focal point. The plan, based on Giuseppe Poggi's 19th-century design, calls for sandstone paving with Istrian stone inlays, a double ring of trees (39 in total, 31 newly planted starting in March), a circle of flush-mounted fountains and road traffic pushed farther from the gate. The taxi rank moves to Piazza Piave.
Traffic changes this month
- Gavinana, from October 15: Via Coluccio Salutati and Via Giovanni dalle Bande Nere become one-way toward Piazza Gualfredotto as work starts on the Gavinana stop. Bus lines 8 and 23 are rerouted.
- Night closures, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.: track laying and road repairs on Via Giovanni dalle Bande Nere (October 12 - 14), Viale Europa and Viale Giannotti, with further Viale Giannotti night work October 27 - 31 and November 3 - 7.
- Via Poggio Bracciolini: closed 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. through October 21.
- Borgo la Croce: dead end at the Piazza Beccaria side through October 30.
Parking
Two park-and-ride lots on Viale Europa near the Cimitero del Pino (P2 with 272 spaces, P1 with 196) and a third next to the Viola Park in Bagno a Ripoli (358 spaces) are designed for drivers arriving from the Valdarno, Chianti and the A1 motorway. Near Piazza Beccaria, the Piazza Alberti garage is half price - €1 an hour instead of €2 when paid through the BMOVE app - through December 2026. Residents of work zones can park free overnight in the Parterre, Alberti and Beccaria garages after applying through SAS.
Will it open on time?
The official date is the end of 2026. With work on the Gavinana stop only starting in mid-October and new trees at Piazza Beccaria not going in until March, passenger service in early 2027 or later looks more realistic.
For live road updates, the city recommends its IF Infomobilità app; a map of active work sites is on firenzetramvia.it. Source: Comune di Firenze, updated October 12, 2026.
