Bistrot al 5
Perched on the hillside piazza of Fiesole, Bistrot al 5 is one of the more quietly accomplished restaurants in the greater Florence area - a Slow Food member that takes its sourcing seriously without making a performance of it. Chef Enrico Mantovanelli works a seasonal menu built around locally sourced ingredients, and the kitchen has a knack for layering simple Tuscan dishes into something more considered: fusilloni with sheep ragù, pici with citrus-accented ragù, agnolotti stuffed with Tuscan sausage in yellow tomato sauce. Desserts earn genuine praise - the carrot cake and a vanilla-elderflower crème brûlée in particular.

The setting divides neatly by season: a summer terrace on the piazza with views over the city, and a warm, cosy interior in winter. The wine list leans local, covering Tuscan labels with some depth, and the kitchen accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diners without fuss. Service is attentive and unpretentious.
If you are into fancy, fine dining experiences, it's worth taking the trip to Fiesole when you are in Florence.
