The amazing ceramics of Heiner Bauer were always some of my favorites of this annual show

October in Florence usually brings impeccable weather and a full calendar that starts fast. The first weekend of the month, October 3 and 4, is one of our favorite annual events, the Fiera della Ceramica (ceramics festival) in Piazza Santa Croce, and it overlaps with the last days of the Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato and the autumn flower show.

Major October events in Florence:

The Luna del Cacciatore (Hunter's Moon) over The Church of San Frediano in Cestello in October

• Ceramics Fair (Fiera Internazionale della Ceramica): Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Piazza Santa Croce. This is the 27th edition, with at least 70 Italian and European ceramists, free admission, and clay workshops for children. On Sunday at 11 a.m. there is a talk on 3D printing in ceramics. • Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato (BIAF): the 34th edition at Palazzo Corsini opened on September 26 and closes on Sunday, October 4, so October 1 through 4 are the last days to see it. It is held only every two years, and it is a serious collectors' fair rather than a flea market. • Autumn Plant and Flower Show (Mostra Autunnale di Piante e Fiori): Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Giardino dell'Orticoltura, with more than 70 nurseries and growers. Admission is free. The historic Tepidarium glasshouse is scheduled to reopen with the show after a long restoration. See our page on the Tuscan Horticultural Society.
• Middle East Now: Tuesday, October 6 through Sunday, October 11 at the Cinema La Compagnia and Cinema Astra. The 17th edition has 33 films and documentaries, plus exhibitions and talks, and it opens the 50 Giorni di Cinema, a series of international film festivals held in Florence. • Feast of St. Reparata: Thursday, October 8, the day of Florence's co-patron saint, marked by a historical parade and the offering of a candle in the crypt under the Duomo. We have not found the 2026 schedule yet; the city has typically published it a day or two ahead. More in our article on the Feast of St. Reparata.
• Firenze Books: Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11 at the Ippodromo del Visarno in the Cascine park. Expect author talks, readings, children's workshops, and a large independent bookshop, with a largely Italian-language program. Admission is free: Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The program is at firenzebooks.it.
• Santo Spirito Organic Market: the Fierucola in Piazza Santo Spirito is held on the third Sunday of the month, which this October is the 18th, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• Fair of San Luca in Impruneta: on October 18, one of the oldest market fairs in Tuscany, in the town just south of Florence. October is also chestnut season, and there are plenty of chestnut festivals in the hills around the city.
• Autunno Fiorentino: from October 1 through November 30, this fifth edition brings more than 200 concerts, theater, dance, and workshops, mostly to neighborhoods outside the historic center.
• Clocks go back: Italy ends daylight saving time on Sunday, October 25, when clocks move from 3 a.m. back to 2 a.m.

Looking ahead:

The Florence Biennale of contemporary art and design is not held this year. The XV edition took place in October 2025, and the XVI edition will run from October 23 to 31, 2027, at the Fortezza da Basso, marking the Biennale's 30th anniversary under the theme "Beyond the Sense of Time."
