You've arrived in Florence at 9 a.m. and can't check in until 3 p.m. Or you're heading out on a late train with a day to kill. Either way you're standing in Santa Maria Novella (Firenze SMN) station with a suitcase, and the good news is that leaving it somewhere safe is easy and cheap. Here's exactly how, including the official station deposit and the app-based alternatives around town.

The station's own deposito bagagli is run by Kibag and sits at the far end of the station down by Platform 16, signposted in blue as "Luggage Storage."

The part nobody tells you: the deposit is inside the ticket barriers. If you have a valid train ticket and can get through to the tracks (binari), you can reach it from inside the station -- it's a little way down the last track to the east, Track 16, past the McDonald's.

If you're just dropping off or collecting bags and not boarding a train, you need the outside entrance instead: it's on the east side of the building, off a service parking lot on Via Valfonda. Head around the eastern flank rather than in through the main Piazza della Stazione entrance. This entrance works whether or not you're ticketed.

So if you're storing bags without travelling -- you've already arrived, or you're back in town for the day -- use the street entrance on Via Valfonda. It leads into the deposit from outside the gated area and works whether or not you're ticketed. The deposit is open 07:00 to 21:00 every day, including Sundays. Prices start at €6 per bag and rise with how long you leave it; your ticket also includes access to the station restrooms, which normally cost €1.20 -- a small thing, but genuinely useful when you're between trains.

This is a staffed, manned deposit, not a bank of self-service lockers. That means your bag is handed over and checked in, and you'll want to allow a few minutes at both ends. In high season -- roughly May through September, and especially mid-morning -- there can be a queue. If you're on a tight connection, build in twenty minutes rather than five. You can also book and pay online in advance on the Kibag site, which is worth doing in summer.

App-Based Storage Around the City

If you're not near the station, or the station deposit is closed or queued, a handful of networks let you leave bags in partner shops, hotels, and cafés across the centre. You book on your phone, get a code, and drop the bag. Typical pricing is a flat day rate per bag, often a little cheaper than the station, and locations near the Duomo, San Lorenzo, and the Oltrarno are usually easy to find.

These are worth considering when your plans centre on a neighbourhood rather than the station -- for example if you're spending the day around the museums or heading to the Duomo and don't want to double back to SMN. They also sidestep the ticket-gate problem entirely.

If you're flying out later in the day and want to explore the city first, the practical move is usually to take the T2 tram into town (about 20 minutes) and use the station deposit or a city drop-off point, rather than relying on finding storage at the airport itself.

• Bring ID. Staffed deposits in Italy generally require identification at check-in.
• Note the closing time. The station deposit shuts at 21:00 -- if your evening plans run late, make sure you collect before then, not after.
• Don't leave valuables. Passports, medication, electronics and anything you'd hate to lose should stay with you.
• Oversized items. Bikes, skis, and unusually large bags may be priced differently or refused; check ahead if you're carrying something out of the ordinary.
