Driving to Florence and parking in the city center is possible, but requires understanding the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) - Florence's restricted traffic zone - and knowing where the best garages are. This guide covers everything you need to know.

The ZTL: What You Need to Know

The ZTL is a restricted zone covering most of Florence's historic center. Cameras at every entry point photograph license plates automatically. If you drive into the ZTL without a permit, you will receive a fine of €80-€335 - and if you're driving a rental car, the agency will add an administrative fee on top of that. The ZTL is active Monday-Friday 7:30am-8:00pm and Saturday 7:30am-4:00pm. It is suspended on Sundays and public holidays.

Street Parking

Blue-line street parking is metered and available throughout the city outside the ZTL. Pay at the nearest parcometro (pay station), get a ticket, and leave it on your dashboard. Rates vary but are typically €1-2/hour. Always check the signs - some zones are resident-only at certain hours. White lines are free but rare near the center. Yellow lines are reserved and not for public use.

Best value: Fortezza da Basso (Fiera) -- large, covered, 24h, outside ZTL, walking distance to SMN and the center.
Multi-day stays: Parterre at Piazza della Libertà offers competitive daily rates.
Avoiding city driving entirely: Villa Costanza park-and-ride off the A1 motorway -- max €7/day plus €1.70 for the tram into the city.
South of the Arno: Oltrarno-Calza is ideal for Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens.

Can I park for free in Florence?

Free parking in Florence is extremely limited near the city center. White-line street parking is technically free but almost nonexistent within walking distance of the historic center. Your best realistic option is the Villa Costanza park-and-ride off the A1 motorway, which offers free parking with a paid tram connection into the city (around €1.70 each way).

Is there parking near the Uffizi Gallery?

There is no public parking directly adjacent to the Uffizi -- the surrounding streets are inside the ZTL restricted zone. The closest practical option is the Oltrarno-Calza garage, a 10-15 minute walk across the Ponte Vecchio. Alternatively, park at Piazza della Libertà (Parterre) and walk or take a bus south toward Piazza della Signoria.

How much does parking cost in Florence?
