Driving to Florence and parking in the city center is possible, but requires understanding the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) - Florence's restricted traffic zone - and knowing where the best garages are. This guide covers everything you need to know.

The ZTL: What You Need to Know

The ZTL is a restricted zone covering most of Florence's historic center. Cameras at every entry point photograph license plates automatically. If you drive into the ZTL without a permit, you will receive a fine of €80-€335 - and if you're driving a rental car, the agency will add an administrative fee on top of that. The ZTL is active Monday-Friday 7:30am-8:00pm and Saturday 7:30am-4:00pm. It is suspended on Sundays and public holidays.

Street Parking

Blue-line street parking is metered and available throughout the city outside the ZTL. Pay at the nearest parcometro (pay station), get a ticket, and leave it on your dashboard. Rates vary but are typically €1-2/hour. Always check the signs - some zones are resident-only at certain hours. White lines are free but rare near the center. Yellow lines are reserved and not for public use.
